Upcoming Feature: Inpainting

Aug 28, 2023

What is Inpainting?

I am so excited for the upcoming launch of niji・journey’s inpainting feature! It’s the ability to select a region of the painting and redraw it.

Please keep in mind that the UI shown here is used solely for research purposes. The actual product will use a different interface.

For example, this is a good picture, but it has 3 hands.

We can select the offending area and ask niji to repaint it.

Depending on which area we select, we can fix the result in different ways.

Creative Inpainting

Inpainting isn’t limited to fixing mistakes. We can ask niji to add extra elements, like his best friend.

Or even a background!

Inpainting Multi-Character Scenes

Using a niji-made empty classroom as a background, we can inpaint characters.

How about an isekaied princess?

The obligatory tracksuit protagonist?

The dragon disguised as a simple human?

Inpainting offers a great way to bring multiple characters into a packed scene.

Or, you can use it to turn a packed scene into an empty one:

--no humans, truly no humans!

Inpainting Your Perfect Shot

You can use it to design the perfect moment for your story.

No more hiding failed areas behind text bubbles! No more compromising on your key shot! Storytellers, this is the feature you’ve been waiting for!

Visual Control Paradigms

The industry of generative AI is still in its infancy. Text-to-image is an entryway interface: it allowed so many who have never touched an image editor to turn their thoughts into beautiful images.

As the field matures and users become more skilled at manipulating images, they will want more control over their canvases. While text is the easiest interface to work with, it does not offer these controls.

With the introduction of panning, zooming, and soon inpainting, we are exploring new ways we can manipulate generations in a more visually-aware space. I’m so excited for the new features we’re developing!

And, once again, please keep in mind that the UI shown here is used solely for research purposes. The actual product will use a different interface.

Inpainting is coming soon! Please look forward to it!

As always, thank you for accompanying us on this journey.
