How to make your OC in niji・journey/Midjourney

Mar 30, 2023

One of the top questions we get asked is “how do I get niji to draw my original character?”

After all, as we had briefly touched on in 🌹 The Study of Aesthetics, there are many ways to answer the same text prompt: This is fine if we’re just thinking of ideas, but how do we give niji more guidance if we already have a character in mind? How do we keep drawing the same character repeatedly?

The solution is simple: in order to keep drawing the same character, we must not only TELL niji who the character is, but also SHOW niji who the character is.

Step 1: Construct your character

prompt: a cute girl with pink hair and knight armor sailor outfit twintails

In niji, a character identification consists of 2 parts.

a character id image

a text description

For best results, keep the description simple. The description we picked here is “girl pink hair twintails knight armor.” Notice that it’s shorter than the prompt that originally generated the image.

We can test how well the description performs by putting it back through niji, with the following command.

/imagine https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/some_picture_here girl pink hair twintails knight armor

Where the red is the url of the picture of the character, the blue is the description of the character.

The easiest way to get a url of a character is to post the image to a channel in discord. click through to expand the image into the web browser, and then copy the url from the address bar.

prompt: [character id image] girl pink hair twintails knight armor

prompt: [character id image] girl pink hair twintails knight armor

Notice that we don’t have to specify the curly hair, the pink ribbon, or the blue eyes: niji is reading that from the image and keeping it consistent through many generations.

(For more information on how to use image prompts, see Midjourney’s documentation) https://docs.midjourney.com/docs/image-prompts

Step 2: Pose your character

Once we have the description and picture, it’s time to pose this character. Our prompt needs to consist of 3 parts: the url of the picture, the description, and the pose

For example,

/imagine https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/some_picture_here girl pink hair twintails knight armor eating a hamburger

The yellow that we have added to the above prompt is the pose.

prompt: [character id image] girl pink hair twintails knight armor eating a hamburger

prompt: [character id image] girl pink hair twintails knight armor sleepy holding teddy bear

Step 3: Put your character in a background.

You can put more than one image link at a time: this is especially useful when you want to put a character into a background. Just like characters, we need an id image and a description for the background.

prompt: moonlight garden

/imagine https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/some_picture_here https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/background_picture_here girl pink hair twintails ballgown moonlight garden glimmering extremely detailed

We have added the url link to the background id image, and the description of the background to the prompt. We also took the extra step of turning her outfit into a ballroom gown.

prompt: [character id image] [background id image] girl pink hair twintails ballgown moonlight garden glimmering extremely detailed

This easy solution works on both midjourney and niji・journey! For best results, we recommend keeping the prompt simple and let the id images do the talking. (The saying “a picture is worth 1000 words” truly applies here)
