Niji Style Event: Week 3 - Cute

Cute injects an air of whimsy to your pictures. Use it for a charming, healing feel to your creations.

Where the previous two styles have focused on amazing first read impact, Cute creates images that invite you to slow down and take some time to relax in the hectic pace of life.

Cute - Style Breakdown

For this new style, we drew inspiration from cute stationary and decorative graphic design.

1) Cute eye style - Cute features an extremely adorable face stylization.

2) Flat shading - For this style, we reduced the effect of lighting on the composition. Cute features a delicate, flat shading scheme.

3) Negative space - Due to its strong 2D element, cute employs the use of large regions of empty space to bring emphasis to a composition.

4) Strong detailing - Cute style utilizes intricate graphic details for a robust composition.

The Beauty of Simplicity

Traditionally, the niji project has pursued a cool, dramatic look. For Cute, we took a turn in the opposite direction and challenged ourselves to make something extremely charming.

It may look simpler, now that we’ve stripped out a lot of the rendering component, but “simpler” styles are deceptively harder: when an image is composed of less rendering, it is more important for every part of the image to be more coherent. Behind the scenes, Cute might be our most ambitious style yet!

To construct Cute, we took a graphical 2D approach, with a lot of emphasis on decorative elements. We find that images generated with Cute punch the viewer less in the face, but gently invite the eyes to wander and explore for longer after first entry, encouraging them to enjoy slowly and uncover all the treasures hidden inside the picture.

The cool thing about Cute is that while it has a default drawing style, it also works great as a modifier to other ways of drawing.

In other words, you can use it to make any sort of drawing look cute: simply write the words for the other style you wish to see into the prompt you are inputting into Cute.

Whether you are using it to add cuteness to your subjects or enjoying its default for its simplistic elegance, we hope that you’ll find yourself healed by the pictures that come out of this style.

Mapping personal aliases

Sometimes, you might want to apply a style to a few prompts, but it is troublesome to keep changing the settings back and forth. For situations like this, you can consider making a personal alias for the setting. You can think of aliases as creating a shortcut for commonly used words.

To make a personal alias, use the following command:

/prefer option set option: cu value: --style cute

/prefer option set option: is the command

cu is the alias (the shorter form)

value: is the second part of the command

--style cute is the command that is being turned shorter

After running this command, --style cute will be shortened to --cu.

You can use this convenient feature to create shortened forms of any text that you type often into the prompt box!

If you are using niji from midjourney bot, you can also use this technique instead of the /prefer suffix mentioned last week in 🎭 Introducing Niji 5 - Expressive!

Simply add the niji 5 modifier like so:

/prefer option set option: cu value: --niji 5 --style cute

This command will both allow --cu to turn on niji 5 and set the style to cute.

Adjusting the influence of aesthetic

You can use the --s parameter to tune the effect of aesthetic up and down. Please refer to the bottom of 🍎 Introducing Niji 5! for details on how to use the --s parameter!

Below is a diagram of the effect of the style parameter on Cute.

We can directly compare the difference in aesthetic sensibility between Expressive and Cute . The left side is the Cute, and the right side is Expressive.

Finally, here is a comparison diagram of the styles we’ve released thus far.

I hope you enjoy! Thank you for your continued support!
