Vol 2? What about Vol 1?

So you might wonder, “why is this volume two? where is volume one?”

The original first volume of niji journal was printed in celebration of the launch of niji journey, with the theme “Apple.”

It featured a fashion book of community submissions in the front.

…And a comic book produced by the research team in the back

After the materials were compiled with the help of the community, the original volume one printing and distribution was a hobby project from members of the niji・journey research team. We made a small print run for winter comiket 2022 in Tokyo, with this charming sign featuring Black Cat the black cat.

It was a new and exciting experience for us, terminal desk and screen dwellers as we were, to explore the intricacies of physical goods manufacturing.

The niji・journey research team routinely works with the midjourney bot team, but on that cold winter day, we found ourselves in a different format of collaboration when it came to heavy boxes of magazines and the upper body strength to move them. Between the two of our teams, I must testify that mj bot team has much better muscle tone, haha.

Let’s make Volume 2 together!

This second volume of the journal will highlight the coolest things about the niji community, so it seemed fitting to print it after our community-driven style update. Ultimately, we want niji journal to fulfill these goals:

Showcase the work of the community through open submissions

Celebrate the work of distinguished creators making cool projects with niji, through interviews

Explore new areas where generative AI can be used to solve real-world problems, through experimental projects, like comic production.

We invite you to submit an entry to the niji journal project! If you haven’t yet, give the new default style a try! You can read up on what’s so special about it in 🍰 A New Niji Style?!

Here, you can see the effect of the --s parameter on the newest niji style update.

As creators, it is the utmost privilege to work on a product which many people love: all the conceptual things in this world: art, product design, and the very definition of beauty itself, only come to life when people keep them close to their hearts.

Many times, I think back to this concept of Zanarkand from Final Fantasy X, where a beautiful city is materialized through a collaborative dream. It is essentially an entire reality powered by thousands of lost souls running /imagine at the same time through their own brains. Together, they created an impossibly opulent, floating paradise in a world where magic had run dry.

It amazes me that this kind of incredible scenario is not as far-fetched as we think: whether it’s making a style based on user interests or running a maids-and-butlers-themed community magazine project, we are making shared visualizations - an intensely accelerated act of collaborative imagination made possible through generative AI. The future of this paradigm is an interesting new frontier to explore.

Will we launch periodic style updates that reflect the evolving taste of the community? Will we arrive at a point where everyone has a personalized style? How many style flags can we shove into that small /settings menu before the ever-patient Midjourney bot dev team explodes? These are all questions waiting to be answered.

Of course, the beauty of a true journey is in its uncertainty. As always, I thank you for your kind support on this adventure.

Now, let’s imagine the loveliest maids and butlers together!
